biker on snowy trail | The Elephants Perch Idaho

Well, the Boulder Mountain Tour is over which means just one thing to the Faithful, it is now Bike Season.  Really, the current weather pattern, which I will conveniently blame on global warming, has turned our Winter Wonderland into a Parched Desert-land. So let’s make the most of it and start riding around.  Besides, as [...]

Bike Shop Employee of the Month

This month the prestigious title of Bike Shop Employee of the Month goes to one Roger Mankus of Ketchum, Idaho. Roger comes to us from Chicago by way of Texas and New Mexico and as much as I love to make shit up about people, everything I’m going to relate to you about this man is absolutely true, mostly. Roger has been a UAW employee with Ford at a plant in Illinois, is a veteran of the US Army, and has advanced training in massage from one of the country’s best schools for the healing arts. He has competed in all but one of the grueling Leadville 100 mountain bike races having had to sit out just one because of a broken femur. He has been a multiple time competitor in the Race Across America and has crewed on RAAM for a multiple athletes. He nearly killed himself and another prominent local while crewing for former Tour de France racer Jacques Boyer. He has competed in the insane Iditabike race across the frozen, unforgiving terrain of Alaska (although he did have to be rescued by ski plane he remembers it all fondly). He holds the local record for most skins up Bald Mountain during winter. He has competed in PAC Tours, has been a boxer, a body builder, has bike toured all over the U.S. and Europe, has built his own bicycle frame and was one of the earliest adopters locally of the 29er platform and has a beautiful daughter named Emma. This doesn’t even to begin to scratch the surface of this intriguing man and his stories and platitudes are many. Stop by the shop to chat with The Voice of Reason and maybe buy him a Coke or a Stella. As Bike Shop Employee of the Month, Roger receives bouquet of fresh cut flowers, a diamond crusted tiara, and the admiration of his blessed co-workers. Yes, Roger brightens any room he walks into and his gift of the gab has trapped captivated many of the folk who frequent our humble shop. Also, there are only a couple of us working back here, so Roger will likely have this award five or six times in the coming year, so if you don’t make it in to congratulate him this month, just wait and the honor will soon again be bestowed upon his salt and pepper pate.

Winter Run ‘Round Sun Valley

running in sun valley ketchum

It’s cold out there, I mean like Minnesota cold out there. I just went for a run ‘round Sun Valley and, while my body was warm enough what with the two pairs of tights, four shirts, and a techie jacket, my freaking lungs were cold from sucking in all that arctic air. Weird to feel [...]

Groms on Bikes

kids mountain biking

Happiness is watching your kids rip their mountain bikes ‘round the local BMX track. It’s good skills building for the groms and when we make our pilgrimages down to Moab they handle that stuff without whining or waiting. Actually, this picture was taken about three days after my eldest was finally relieved of the [...]
