Hardgoods Buyer & Manager — Full-Time
JOB SUMMARY:
The Hardgoods Buyer/Manager establishes and manages the outdoor product and footwear assortment and provides management leadership on the sales floor. This role supervises hardgoods staff members, and ensures staff are trained on products. In addition, this roll oversees the merchandising in the hard-goods sections of the store.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage outdoor product & footwear assortments that align with The Elephant’s Perch goals as well as market and consumer trends.
- Perform all administrative tasks related to buying, ensuring orders are in our system with accurate terms, pricing, and product descriptions.
- Manage assortments with regular evaluation of product flow, placing re-orders as needed.
- Analyze point of sale data to make informed buying decisions.
- Build and maintain relationships with vendors to gain knowledge and data as it pertains to product category. Utilize established relationships in product selection and pricing negotiations.
- Identify current and future customer needs by establishing rapport with potential and actual customers and by remaining knowledgeable about the latest trends in outdoor footwear and activities.
- Schedule regular product clinics and support floor staff to familiarize them with the product.
- Mentoring teamwork and strong morale among co-workers by remaining flexible and being willing to pitch-in to address needs or opportunities that arise within and beyond your department or job description.
- Maintain excellent communication with vendors, customers, and other staff members.
- Coordinate and work with the receiving/inventory manager to ensure the outdoor product & footwear in the stockroom is well organized.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Active user of outdoor gear as a hiker, biker, runner, or other shop-related activity
- Experience working in the outdoor industry
- Positive, customer-first attitude
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Keen interest in working collaboratively with customers, owners, and sales floor personnel
- Ability to effectively communicate with individuals and groups, demonstrate integrity and respect, and establish authority through credibility and knowledge
- Ability to balance long-term vision with more immediate, practical store needs
- Ability to manage stress, keep track of details, think creatively, prioritize, and manage time effectively
Preferred
- Familiarity with point-of-sale computer systems and inventory control software
- Experience as a clothing, footwear, or outdoor sporting goods buyer or retail manager
- Preference given to candidates who engage in outdoor activities and can speak from experience about the brands we sell
Physical Requirements
- Continually able to stand, walk up and down staircases, carrying boxes, product, displays, and other necessary store-related items.
- Proficiently use computer-based Point of Sale and inventory systems to place orders, assist customers, and run reports. (We will provide training on our POS system.)
- Ability to travel off-site to trade shows
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
- Annual compensation range of 60-70k depending on experience.

Bike Mechanic (Full-Time & Part-Time)
The Elephant’s Perch is hiring the mechanically inclined for wrench-turning fulfillment in our busy shop. The right candidate will be just weird enough to fit in with our merry band of misfits, but no weirder. If you’ve always wanted the prestige and glamour associated with being a bike mechanic, now is your time! Drop by the store and talk to Jason about the exciting possibilities. This is likely a four-day-a-week position, weekends are a must, and the lucky finalist will be comfortable multitasking and interacting with customers while remaining a pinnacle of friendly composure.
Overview
This is a full-time position (32+ hours per week). We are also looking for PT bike mechanics.
You should have
- Previous bike mechanic experience
